RIP Michael Thelwell
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Thelwell, who left us peacefully just before midnight on January 7, 2025, after a short bout of bronchial pneumonia. Michael was a beloved member of our community, known for his kindness, dedication, and remarkable achievements.
Michael was born on October 5, 1934, to Joseph and Elsie Thelwell. He grew up in Wallington and later moved to Southbourne during the war. He attended St. Elpheges Primary School and a Jesuit school, where he made many lifelong friends. After the war, the family settled in Purley, and Michael attended the John Fisher School, forming several lasting friendships.
Michael pursued his passion for engineering at Kingston College, where he qualified as an electrical engineer. He served in the RAF from 1954 to 1956, where his skills earned him an officer’s position. Michael’s career as a research engineer began at the Electricity Generating Board in Leatherhead, and he later worked for the Electricity Association in London, traveling extensively for work.
In 1959, Michael met Angela at a social event, and they married two years later. Together, they raised four wonderful sons: Paul, Simon, Richard, and Adrian. Michael was deeply involved in his community, serving as a governor and Chair of Governors at John Fisher School, and contributing to various organizations, including the Abbeyfield Committee and the Catenians.
Michael had a passion for photography, capturing candid moments at family events. He was also an active scout leader and a dedicated member of the Catenians, organizing trips and events that left lasting memories for those who participated.
Despite being diagnosed with Myeloma in 2015 and dementia in 2022, Michael remained resilient and continued to engage with his community. He spent his final days at Cranmer Court Nursing Home, where he was well cared for and participated in activities.
Michael’s achievements and contributions were made possible by the unwavering support of his wife, Angela, and the love of his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with Angela, their children, and grandchildren during this difficult time.
Michael Thelwell will be remembered for his dedication to friendship, fun, family, and faith. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and commitment that will continue to inspire us all.
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
